Rounded Shoulders

Tight muscle in the front of the shoulder causes the shoulder to curl forward.

Tight muscle in the front of the shoulder
causes the shoulder to curl forward.

Physio says:

Rounded shoulders and back kyphosis cause the upper body and neck to slump forward.

Notice the trainee's shoulders curl forward in the photograph.

In lady golfers this is caused by prolonged bending from activities such as computer keyboard work, gardening, playing bridge, knitting and preparing food.

Poor upper body posture may also result from being overweight.

Young players may find a problem caused by slumping over a school desk, excessive practice of short game such as putting or excessively heavy school bags.

Pro says:

The rounding shoulders and poking chin posture is detrimental to set up position needed to play quality shots.

It often leads to poor rotation of the spine in generally creating lower back problems and pain over a period of time.

This poor rotation will usually mean some form of sliding laterally in the golf swing making it more difficult to produce consistent timing and to impart an athletic impact strike effecting distance and directional control.

Stretching out tight muscles

In order to stretch out the tight muscles in the front of the shoulders,

  • stand in a door,
  • place your palms at shoulder level on the frame, and
  • gently move forward and feel the stretch in the pectoral muscles.

Try to keep your chin tucked in and your shoulders down.
